IELTS

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is required for entry to university in the UK and other countries. IELTS assesses all your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking.

There are two versions of the test: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Both are graded in exactly the same way.

a) The IELTS Academic test is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in English speaking environment.

b) The IELTS General Training test is for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment.

Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS is available at more than 1,200 locations worldwide and there are 48 test dates a year.

You will take the first three parts of the test all on one day in the following order: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There are no breaks between the first three tests.

A score is given for each test component – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an overall band score.

IELTS is accepted for Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for study, work and migration in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, as well as for study and work in the USA. Each country sets its own IELTS requirements.

While it is up to each organisation to set a validity period that works for their purposes, the IELTS partners recommend a 2-year validity period for IELTS test results.

The IELTS test is jointly owned by three organisations known as the IELTS test partners. Alongside IDP: IELTS Australia are fellow co-owners, the British Council and Cambridge English Language Assessment

Usually, we suggest IELTS practice test books by Cambridge University. Currently there are 12 books in the series, 12 being the latest. The latest book is usually given as a complimentary copy when the student registers for the exam. So, ideally, we can give any book except the latest one.
